St Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach is a musical setting of the story of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, based on the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament.
When I was in my first year as an office worker, I bought this work on LP records with my very first salary. It was an expensive boxed set, and I remember hesitating for about a week before finally deciding to purchase it.
The recording featured here was conducted by Karl Richter (May 5, 1969), and it may even be the same version I purchased on LP years ago. Looking back, this piece may have been the starting point of my interest in the German language.
About ten years ago, our church choir had the opportunity to sing the opening chorus together with our church orchestra. Even just hearing the quiet beginning of the orchestra deeply moved my heart. I still hope that one day I can sing it again.

Als ich mein erstes Gehalt bekam, kaufte ich diese Musik auf Schallplatten. Die Box war teuer, und ich überlegte etwa eine Woche, bevor ich sie kaufte.
Die Aufnahme hier ist von Karl Richter (5. Mai 1969). Vielleicht ist es dieselbe Version, die ich früher auf LP hatte. Rückblickend denke ich, dass dieses Werk mein Interesse an der deutschen Sprache geweckt hat.
Vor etwa zehn Jahren sang unser Kirchenchor den Eingangschor zusammen mit unserem Kirchenorchester. Schon der leise Anfang der Musik hat mein Herz tief bewegt. Ich hoffe, dass ich es eines Tages wieder singen kann.
