⑤My Faith Journey: Graduation Thesis and Oral Examination (En)

(I had been worried about my graduation thesis on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. After learning about sin, I managed to write it, but I was still anxious about the oral examination.)

Writing my graduation thesis was not easy for me. I was not very good at writing, even in Japanese. Looking back, I realize that although I liked English, I was not especially interested in literature itself. It may seem natural that I chose the English literature department simply because I liked English.

Because I had been attending church regularly, I came to understand the meaning of “sin,” which is the main theme of The Scarlet Letter. Thanks to this, I somehow managed to write my thesis. I did my very best, but I was not confident about either the content or my writing. To be honest, and rather embarrassingly, I had read only half of the original English text. I relied mostly on the Japanese translation. Still, I think I was able to write a fairly good summary in English.

Then the day of the oral examination arrived. Since it was my first experience, I was extremely nervous. I kept wondering what kind of questions I would be asked and what would happen if they questioned me deeply. Before leaving home, I prayed to Jesus:
“Jesus, I did my best on my thesis, but I have no confidence. Please help me avoid difficult questions.” It was, admittedly, a very selfish prayer.

We had to sit outside the classroom and wait for our turn. The students three before me and just before me had also written on Hawthorne, and their examinations took a long time. I became even more anxious and thought, What if I am questioned for over thirty minutes?

Finally, it was my turn. The professor in charge and the head of the literature department were seated there. For some reason, they asked me only two or three simple questions.
Then the professor in charge said, “You have written very well about sin. Are you a Christian?”

I told him that not understanding sin had led me to attend church, and that I was later baptized and became a Christian. He smiled and said, “That is a blessing, isn’t it?”
I did not know whether he himself was a Christian.

The other professor was also a local pastor, so I went on to explain in detail how I was baptized and how the pain in my stomach disappeared afterward. (I may be the only person who ever gave a personal testimony during an oral examination.) However, he gave a slight smile that felt dismissive. I was shocked, because it seemed as if he was thinking, How foolish. I could not understand why a pastor could not accept something wonderful that God had done.

Later, the professor in charge asked me, “Did you read the entire original text?” I answered honestly, “No. It was too difficult, and I read only half of it.”

He seemed to have already known this, but he did not get angry. My oral examination ended in what felt like about ten minutes, almost like casual conversation. (It may have been longer, but it felt very short to me.)

I was amazed. Even though my prayer had been so selfish, Jesus had answered it. My final grade was B. Hallelujah!

Merry Christmas! Luke 2:9-11 (Gre/En/Ja)

クリスマスなので、ルカ2:9～11を取り上げたいと思います。一年前も取り上げたのですが、殆ど説明なしでアップしてしまったので、少し文法的なことも加えたいと思います。下のテキストは私がWordで作成したものを画像処理したものです。

本文の古典ギリシャ語は、聖書アプリのTHGNT、その下はBible Hubの英語対訳になります。文法の詳細はBlue Letter Bibleをご参照下さい。黄緑色とオレンジ色の文字は、それぞれ動詞と名詞になります。なお、初心者の為間違いがあるかも知れないことを、予めご了承ください。😊

この節の中に「アオリスト」という時制が３ヶ所、１０、１１節にも出て来ますが、英語の文法にはない時間の考え方なので今一つピンと来ません。便宜的に、word by wordの対訳は過去形になっていますが、ギリシャ語の時制の考え方がちょっと違います。

最初の動詞「ἐπέστη」に関して考えると、英語の過去形とは異なり、時間よりも「出来事を一まとまりとして捉える」時制です。ἐπέστη（立ち現れた）は、天使の突然の出現という決定的な出来事を示しています。この説明でもまだぼんやりです。^^;

英語の現在完了形が使えないのは、結果・影響が現在にも及び、時間軸が重要だからです。ギリシャ語アオリストは、結果や継続には関心がなく、時間軸も主眼ではありません。ただ「起こった出来事」を一つの事実として提示されます。

調べているうちに、一番分かり易い例に出会いました。Chat GPTによる「直感的なたとえ」が一番腑に落ちました。↓

アオリスト：

・「雷が落ちた」（１回の出来事）

現在完了：

・「雷が落ちた。その影響で停電している。」

過去完了：

・「別の出来事が起きる前に、雷が落ちていた。」

・文法：アオリスト・能動・直説法・三人称単数

φοβεῖσθε（フォベイスセ）

・語根：φοβέομαι（フォベオマイ：恐れる）

・語根：χαρά (カラ：喜び）

λαῷ（ラオー）

・語根：λαός（ラオス：民）

・文法：男性名詞・単数・与格

「φοβεῖσθε（フォベイスセ）」は「φοβέομαι（恐れる）」語尾に-εσθεが付いているのは、この動詞に限らず、二人称複数（あなたがた）現在・命令形の特徴です。ちなみに、二人称単数（あなた）の場合は「φοβοῦ」で、語尾が-ουになります。

「εὐαγγελίζομαι（ユアンゲリゾマイ）」はドイツ語のように二つの単語を組み合わせて作られた語「εὖ＋ἄγγελμα」です。構成用語は「良く、善く（英語の well）＋　使者の知らせ、報告（message）」で「良い知らせを伝える」という意味になります。

これは名詞→動詞への展開で、元々重要なのは名詞「εὐαγγέ  λιον（福音）」で、  εὐαγγέ λιον＝good+message＝良い知らせ→「良い知らせを伝える」になります。又、ここで気になったのは冒頭の読み方です。現代ギリシャ語と古典ギリシャ語の読み方が違っていたからです。↓

古典ギリシャ語：

εὐαγγέ  λιον → eu-angelion → エウ・アン・ゲ・リオン

現代ギリシャ語：

εὐαγγέ  λιον → evangelion → エヴァンゲリオン

枝葉になってしまうのですが、１０数年前に聖書を原書で読みたくて、ギリシャ語教室に１年通ったことがあります。新約聖書が古典ギリシャ語で書かれているとは知らず、うっかり現代ギリシャ語会話教室に行ってしまいました。😅

殆ど忘れていましたが、急に「ヤーサス」「エフハリスト」「パラカロ」という言葉が浮んで来ました。気になるので、改めて調べてみたらこのような意味でした。

① ヤーサス（Γειά  σας）

意味　Hello　Hi　（別れ際なら）Goodbye

Γειά  σας は 丁寧形・複数形

初対面・教室・店・複数相手に使う安全な挨拶

② エフハリスト（Ευχαριστώ ）

意味　Thank you　Thanks

③ パラカロ（Παρακαλώ ）

You’re welcome（どういたしまして）

Please（お願いします）

Here you are（どうぞ）

Pardon?（え？）

パラカロの意味は「どういたしまして」以外は知りませんでした。教室以外でギリシャ語を話すことはないかも知れませんが、勉強になります。

The Fourth Week of Advent & the Christmas Thanksgiving Service (En/Ger)

Yesterday marked the beginning of the fourth week of Advent. The fourth candle was lit, and it was white. The theme of the fourth week is "love." This is a time to remember God’s infinite love, shown in sending His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world.

The white candle represents Christ, the true Light who came into this world. The birth of our Savior is not a distant story, but a sign of God’s love directed toward each one of us. With Christmas just around the corner, I want to receive and savor this grace with a quiet and thankful heart.

Yesterday, a friend of mine attended the Christmas Thanksgiving service with me for the first time in quite a while. After the service, we went to our usual family restaurant, had lunch, and talked for several hours. When I got home, dinner was a church bento and cake. We often talk on the phone, but being able to talk face to face is still the best. 😊

The traditional Christmas gift exchange always takes place, but finding gifts that are suitable for people of all ages and genders is truly difficult. Of course, I pray that good gifts will be given, but as a basic rule, I try to choose something practical—something I myself would be happy to receive.

We prayed that our gifts would be given to the right people. This time, a bit unusually, I prayed that both she and I would receive what each of us truly needed. It was a small prayer, but the Lord heard it, and each of us received something that was just right. 😊

As always, she plans to attend the New Year’s service and is already looking forward to receiving her “New Year’s Word gift.” 😊

At our church, there is a tradition called a “New Year’s Word gift,” where we randomly receive a sealed envelope containing a Bible verse at the New Year’s service. It is often surprising how accurately the verse reflects the year ahead.

Die vierte Adventswoche und der Weihnachtsdankgottesdienst

Gestern hat die vierte Woche des Advents begonnen. Die vierte Kerze wurde angezündet. Sie war weiß. Das Thema dieser Woche war „Freude“.

Die weiße Kerze hat Christus dargestellt, das wahre Licht, das in diese Welt gekommen ist.

Die Geburt Jesu war kein fernes Märchen, sondern ein Zeichen der Liebe Gottes für jeden von uns.

Gestern besuchte eine Freundin mit mir den Weihnachtsdankgottesdienst. Nach dem Gottesdienst sind wir essen gegangen und haben lange miteinander gesprochen.

Beim Weihnachtsgeschenkaustausch beteten wir immer darum, dass die Geschenke zu den richtigen Menschen kommen. Dieses Mal haben wir genau das bekommen, was wir brauchten.😊

Meine Freundin freut sich schon jetzt auf den Neujahrsgottesdienst und auf das „Wort zum neuen Jahr“. 😊

Bach’s Christmas Oratorio – From Question to Answer

Every December, I enjoy listening to Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. It consists of six cantatas, each connected to the church calendar, forming a continuous biblical story.

                                              Structure of the Christmas Oratorio

Although the work lasts about two and a half hours and is sung in German, I used to listen mainly to the bright melodies, thinking it was simply joyful Christmas music. Only recently did I realize its clear spiritual progression.

The Same Chorale at the Beginning and the End

A well-known chorale melody—also heard in the St. Matthew Passion—appears twice in the Christmas Oratorio, once in Part I and again in Part VI, but in a joyful major key.

Part I: Question and Prayer

“Wie soll ich dich empfangen”
(How shall I embrace you?)

This chorale is a personal prayer before Christ.

Key ideas

• Teach me

• Give me light

Part VI: Confidence and Declaration

“Nun seid ihr wohl gerochen”
(Now you are well avenged)

Here, there is no question, only certainty.

From Question to Answer

By placing the  same chorale melody at the beginning and the end, Bach leads us from human questioning to God’s answer.

Someday, I would love to sing this chorale myself.😊

The Third Week of Advent (En/Ger)

This Sunday, the number of Advent candles has increased to three. The theme for the third week is “Joy.” Advent is a season of waiting and expectation for the birth of our Savior, and the third week invites us to remember that His coming is drawing near and to fill our hearts with an overwhelming joy.

Even in the midst of a long wait, God is already at work among us, granting us a quiet yet sure joy.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
(Philippians 4:4, NIV)

I believe that this joy does not come from everything being perfect, but from the promise that the Lord is coming. Although I don’t have three candles lit at home, I want to spend this season mindful that Christmas is approaching, holding this quiet joy in my heart.

Die dritte Adventswoche

An diesem Sonntag brannten drei Adventskerzen. Das Thema der dritten Woche ist „Freude“.

Der Advent ist eine Zeit des Wartens auf die Geburt des Erlösers. In der dritten Woche erinnern wir uns daran, dass Jesu Kommen nahe ist, und wir richten unseren Blick auf die Freude.

Auch in einer langen Zeit des Wartens wirkt Gott schon unter uns. Er schenkt uns eine stille, aber sichere Freude.

Freut euch im Herrn allezeit! Und abermals sage ich: Freut euch!
(Philipper 4,4)

Diese Freude kommt nicht daher, dass alle Umstände perfekt sind. Sie kommt aus der Verheißung, dass der Herr kommt.

Zu Hause habe ich keine drei Kerzen angezündet, aber ich möchte diese Zeit bewusst erleben, spüren, dass Weihnachten näherkommt, und diese stille Freude in meinem Herzen bewahren.

I Made a Christmas Wreath Almost Entirely with 100-Yen Items ♪

I made a Christmas wreath by myself for the first time. I had made wreaths four times before at a local flower class, so I decided to try it on my own this year. Wreath classes using fresh evergreens usually cost around ¥6,000–¥7,000, so this time I set my budget at ¥2,000. 

Almost all the materials came from 100-yen shops (mainly Seria). Only the evergreens—himuro cedar and blue ice—were bought at a flower shop for ¥400 each.

Because the base ring was small and hard, I tied small bundles of greenery with wire instead of inserting branches. By using plenty of evergreens, the wreath looks larger than it actually is.

After making the base, I glued the ornaments on. Placing them in advance made the work much easier. Since the glue gun has no on/off switch, I had to work quickly—but it only took about 10 minutes.

I attached the ornaments the next morning and hung the wreath on my living room wall.
The last photo shows it in natural light on the balcony—it looks even better there. With leftover materials, the actual cost was probably under ¥2,000. 😊

Quick & Easy Microwave Potato Chips

These are the “Consommé Punch–style” potato chips I made by hand for the very first time. 😄 About a month ago, I happened to notice some small potatoes in the fridge and wondered if I could make non-fried potato chips. 

I decided to give it a try—and the result was perfect! They were delicious. 😄

They’re very easy to make and take only a short time. Here’s the recipe:

1. Slice the potatoes using a slicer and soak them in water for about 5 minutes.

2. Pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels.

3. Put parchment paper on a plate and lay the potato slices on it.

4. Microwave at 500W for 5 minutes.

5. Flip them over and microwave for another 30 seconds.

6. Mix consommé granules with salt and crush them together into a fine powder.

7. Toss the crispy potato slices with the seasoning mixture from step 6.

The crispiness may vary depending on the thickness of the slices and the type of microwave you use, but with my old microwave, they turned out perfectly crunchy like this. Mine happened to come out just right, but you may need to make small adjustments.

The Second Week of Advent (En/Ger)

Yesterday marked the second week of Advent, and the second candle was lit. The hanging scroll at the pulpit has also been changed for Christmas. It seems that the colors of Advent candles vary slightly from church to church. Non-Protestant denominations commonly use purple, pink, and white for the final candle.

At my church, we kindle red candles. Red represents the love of Christ on the cross and the light of the Holy Spirit. The fourth candle is white, symbolizing Christ, the true light who came into the world. It's wonderful and enriching that each church expresses this in different ways.

I learned that each week has a theme. Week one has already passed, but the theme for week one was "Hope" — waiting expectantly for the Savior. Week two's theme is "Peace" — reconciliation with God and peace of mind. Christ comes as true peace into our anxieties and conflicts.

Gestern hat die zweite Woche des Advents begonnen, und die zweite Kerze ist angezündet worden. In meiner Kirche zünden wir rote Kerzen an. Rot zeigt die Liebe Christi am Kreuz und das Licht des Heiligen Geistes. Die vierte Kerze ist weiß und zeigt Christus, das wahre Licht der Welt. Jede Kirche hat ihre eigene Art, den Advent zu feiern.

Jede Woche im Advent hat ein Thema. Das Thema der ersten Woche war Hoffnung. Das Thema der zweiten Woche ist Frieden. Frieden bedeutet Versöhnung mit Gott und Ruhe im Herzen. Christus kommt als wahrer Friede in unsere Sorgen und Ängste.

Advent Has Begun (En)

Before I knew it, December had arrived. Time seems to pass at least twice as fast as it did when I was younger. At this rate, New Year’s Eve will be here before I know it. 😅

The Advent season runs from November 30 to December 24. Each Sunday, another candle is lit.

Around this time every year, I used to go to a wreath-making class with friends and make a Christmas wreath using fresh evergreen branches. To be honest, the lesson fees and materials are quite expensive, so this year I’m thinking of gathering the materials myself and giving it a try at home. Since I’ve done it four times already, I feel like I can manage it. 😊

This year’s Christmas Thanksgiving service will be held early, on the 21st, so it feels like the joy of Christmas will last even longer. 😊

After coming home from caroling, I’ve always made a Christmas-style meal and a cake. This year, for the first time in a while, I’m planning to make paella and my favorite chili con carne. 😊

楽しくて飽きない英語語源事典

私は大分前から英語の語源に興味がありました。きっかけは英語の語彙を増やすには、その語源を知った方が早いと思ったからです。知らない単語でも、接頭辞や接尾辞等から意味が推測出来たりするので、この本以外にも読みましたが、これが一番内容豊富で満足しました。

私は英語の参考書等は、文字だけで書かれている白黒系の本は苦手で選びません。😅パッと見の見た目が綺麗で、カラフル、読みやすいのが必須条件です。私だけかも知れませんが、文字ばかりでは楽しくないし飽きてしまうと思うので、本屋で手に取っても買わないです。

この『英語解剖図鑑』は綺麗で、写真やイラストが溢れています。文字も色分けされていて、目から入るものは楽しく飽きることはありません。解剖図鑑と言われているように、英単語を解剖し、見やすく解説し、とても分かり易いです。今までの語源事典にはないタイプです。

実は２年前の６月から１年の間に、手術・入院を３回もすることになりました。１回目の時は緊急入院だったので、殆ど着の身着のままでした。２回目の時は、リハビリ以外は時間を持て余すので、ちょっと嵩張るかなと思いましたが、病院に持って行って正解でした。

ベッドの横に置いていつでも読めるようにしていたので、看護師さん達が「それは何？」と興味を示し、その度に英単語はこんな風に分解出来るんです等説明していました。そして、或る看護師さんが、「写真撮っても良いですか？Amazonで検索して買います。」と。😊

最初のページから順に読んでも、適当な目に留まったページから読んでも、勉強になる楽しい本だと思います。😊
